But one phone call changes all that, taking Jim from the glitz of Los Angeles to the small town of Ashford, Alabama, to save Amanda from going to prison. But Jim knows he'll need help, so he's bringing the best criminal defense lawyer he knows Emily, his fiancee.

Jim and Amanda's last chapter has yet to be written. And with Emily in the mix, how can this possibly end well?

Will Emily's attack on the towns DA make matters worse for Amanda? What is Amanda keeping secret from everyone?

I know it's so cliche but, I couldn't put this book down. I was thinking, I really should be going to bed. No, I'll just read one more chapter. OK, I'll just read another chapter and so it went on late into the night.
Everyone loves Amanda.I found myself loving Amanda too. She had a tragic life yet she was happy and carefree (on the outside anyway). She loved Jim so much she had to let him go.
Emily the tough go get them lawyer, but really a caring sweetheart underneath that tough exterior. I think some of Emily's decisions were out of character. I would have liked to see her warm to Amanda but retain her straight laced image.
I wasn't sure about the introduction of Kyle. I was thinking all the time, is this going somewhere,is he somehow relevent to the story.
Even though the outcome of the story was guessed very early on I still needed to have it verified and couldn't stop reading until it was there in front of me in black and white.
I usually read a novel wondering where the tiltle fits in but I was so engrossed I'd completely forgotten about the title until the line dancing comment popped up in the book. Ahhh The Benefits of Line Dancing.

A very enjoyable read. Well done Edward Shull. Looking forward to reading more.

The Benefits of Line Dancing edition by Edward Shull Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Like they say in the South, this was a "hoot" to read. First Jim dates Amanda when he's a part-time bouncer and full-time college boy hoping to get accepted at Harvard Law. Then Amanda breaks his heart by cheating on him with another man. Years later Jim is an entertainment lawyer dating his fiancee, a criminal lawyer. Then bad girl Amanda causes a huge ruckus in a small Alabama town. The both lawyers head to town because Jim suffers from chivalry and Ms. LA Law can't trust her man with that tramp. Living in Chattanooga (which is not a small town, but still, southern is southern), I can tell you that the characters here are very real. The only unbelievable thing was how the hell does Amanda manages to remove a gun from someone else's holster. I'm a gun owner, and that could never happen to me. Oh well, that's why there's fiction and there's reality. Still, it was a fun read. Good times.
I was given this book through a giveaway on NPR. I had higher hopes for a book they recommend. The characters are sometimes unbelievable and over the top. Like the gay TV star who has nothing better to do than run down south to see his lawyer.

The ending was also very easy to predict. It’s not exactly sixth sense.

That being said, there are very funny parts of the book. The Karaoke scene made me laugh a lot. And the end was very sad and extremely well written. I’ll admit I cried. It’s worth checking out, but I don’t think it’s as great as they made it sound.
Summary Eight years after Amanda broke his heart, Jim has found love again with Emily, a criminal defense lawyer. But when Amanda calls needing a lawyer, Jim can't stop himself from helping her, and Emily is along for the ride. They head out to small-town Alabama, where all three grow to understand love, life, and friendship.

Review It is rare for a debut author to have a good first book. However, I was very impressed with Shull's foray into the world of fiction.

I enjoyed the characters the most. Amanda, Jim, and Emily are not the perfect individuals you see in chick flicks. Rather, they are flawed individuals trying to survive what life throws at them. The characters' struggles and questions are similar to what we go through in our lives. Shull made the character's relatable, and therefore, enjoyable. The characters cannot hide from the reality of their emotions. Jim has to face both his feelings from the past that still exist, and his feelings for the future. Amanda has to deal with her uncertain future. Emily has to deal with a fate no one prepared her for. These relationships are messy but natural.

The overall story was sweet, in its own gritty way. The story was not a typical tiresome love triangle. The love triangle was complex, with multiple layers to each relationship. Some of it was predictable--I knew from the prologue what Amanda's fate was. There was only one way for the story to end. However, that's not the point. This book is about the journey, and it was unique and thought provoking.

I had some issues with the writing. In the first third of the book, the writing felt choppy. It read more like script, especially during conversations. It ruined the pace of the reading. But the middle and end of the book flowed much better. Also, there was no consistent POV through some of the conversations. It's terribly confusing to the reader when we jump POVs from Emily to Jim to Kyle back to Jim all on the same page. Also, the female leads did appear a little bit like a caricature. I wish we saw more juxtaposition within their own personalities--More of Emily's vulnerable side and more of Amanda's strength. It would have added to the complexity.

This is the kind of book you take with you to the beach. You absorb the story as you absorb the summer sun. I applaud Shull for his debut, and I'm looking forward to reading more of his stories!

Sex kissing, involved make outs, some self love references. Low key.
Violence N/A

"My parents own the place."
"Wow, that's cool," Amanda said.
"Oh, the coolest," the girl drooled. "Later today, you might see me scrubbing your toilet and making your bed."
